Good Day Austin, December 19, 2020

It’s definitely not your traditional holiday lights display. The Bee Cave “Buzzfest” happening at the Hill Country Galleria Saturday night is based on the bioluminescence of the bottom of the ocean. The bioluminescence inspiration is creating a UV light-based interactive and immersive installation that involves entire families.

The art and performances for the event are being curated by Kyle Evans and Barna Kantor, who own dadaLab, a space in Austin for people working at the intersection of art, design and technology. Kantor states, “We wanted to have the immersive environment that would be inhabited by experiential art forms whether that’s art-based or image-based or some combination of the two. This experiential immersive space is the deep sea.”

Those looking to fully embrace the interactive part of the festival can become glowing ocean creatures themselves. Snag a bioluminescence kit containing a glow-in-the-dark mask and light-up bracelet and necklace with a donation to the Bee Cave Arts Foundation. Listen to original musical scores, watch glittering light shows, and see performers in illuminated costumes as they bring the deep sea to landlocked West Austin.
